Henry told his friends he was writing a book. That was seven years ago. They heard updates over dinners and at cookouts. He kept writing.

The neighbor at the end of the cul-de-sac proofread every chapter, sometimes twice. The others noticed his desk lamp still on at midnight and knew he was not yet finished.

When he completed the final chapter, they set the table. Cake at the center. Hats ready. Five plates in place. The portraits on the wall hold the characters who lived in his pages.
