This painting began with a memory of the first day of school. Henry was the first to arrive, awake since four, ready long before anyone else. By the time the other kids walked in, he had picked his seat and saved four more. No one asked him to.
That image stayed with me. The same friends, still gathering at a round table, still marking time together. The cake sits at the center. The portraits on the wall suggest how many birthdays have already passed. Loose, expressive brushwork gives the scene movement and warmth, reinforcing the spirit of the gathering.
A Celebration for Henry is the first in a Celebration Series. The guests will change, but the ritual remains.
