The Underground Railroad was a lifeline for slaves escaping to freedom, and Harriet Tubman was undoubtedly one of its most famous "conductors," freeing close to 300. Harriet earned the nickname "Moses" after the prophet Moses in the Bible who led his people to freedom.
I am proud to have painted her. Due to the lack of reference photos, this Influential Woman oil painting has proven the most challenging thus far. After researching Harriet Tubman’s appearance, I learned that she was “darker than any of the others” and “she is coal black.”
I hope that Harriet Tubman would have been pleased with her portrait and that we one day very soon see her countenance on our $20 bills. She will be the first African American on US currency.
