Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis [1929 – 1994] was First Lady of the United States during the presidency of John F. Kennedy (1960 -1963). Her youthful beauty and elegance captivated the nation. In later life, Onassis returned to her old pre-White House career in publishing in New York City and tried without success to live a private life. But her marriage to wealthy shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968 only increased the public’s continuing fascination with her. Throughout decades of being the object of constant, and frequently malicious, intrusiveness into her life, she maintained both her popularity and her dignity.
